Victoria Bigelow Interview

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another blog post. I am very excited about today's post. I know I say this all the time, but this one will be different because I had the pleasure of interviewing my last New Girl post artist, Victoria Bigelow! I want to say thank you to Victoria for letting me interview her. Even though I am a small blogger (at the moment), it is incredible to have someone take the time to talk to me.

Victoria is not only an amazingly talented artist, but she is also such a kind person. I feel like Victoria and I are very similar people in our music, which is something I will refer to often in this post. Victoria has a great attitude towards life. She believes if something was meant to be, it will happen. Victoria knew she wanted to be a part of the music world growing up. She joined theatre programs and fell in love with being in musicals. Then, her mom bought her a guitar from Walmart, after which her voice teacher showed her how to write songs. Victoria's voice teacher lived in Antioch, Tennessee, where she owned a horse farm and a fantastic studio where Victoria traveled to record her songs every other weekend. Victoria later said 'it was an instantaneous fit for her.' She performed at many open mic events like The Bluebird Cafe, and at fifteen, Victoria released an EP independently. She continued to work on her music, building toward her next release in 2019.

Nashville is big about co-writing with other people, and when I went to MTSU, my professors were very adamant that co-writing was the best way to write songs. To a certain extent, I agree with this, but I liked what Victoria said when she released her single, Low, and publishers began to notice her. She said, "My ego was really happy because it was great to be noticed...but is this filling me up the same way that writing alone does?" As an artist myself, I completely understand that. In fact, my next EP is all songs that I have written by myself; songs that I felt did not need to be co-written. When your songs are so personal, sometimes it's better to be the only writer because you are the only one who knows what it is like to go through it. Victoria stated that she is open to co-writing in the future, and if it's supposed to happen, it will happen.

Victoria and I talked about the music she's been working on, and it's fascinating because she's been recording with people all over the world from the comfort of her own home. Just like Taylor Swift recorded two albums during quarantine, Victoria is sending voice recordings to producers in London who edit and mix her songs. This is a game-changer in the music industry because you no longer have to record in a studio or be signed to a label to have that access. I believe it gives more creative control to the artist, so they are producing the music they want the world to hear. However, the downside to this is you are spending your own money on these fees, whereas a label would cover that for you. If you have parents who come from money and are willing to pay, you don't have to worry about the fees either. Most songwriters aren't signed to labels and don't come from money, which is where this becomes an issue. Victoria and I discussed that we both are like that, which puts a hole in our pocket to produce music. I loved what Victoria said about artists: "It's impossible to fake good acting, and it's really easy to fake real musical talent." After my interview with Victoria, I realized that's why I love writing about up-and-coming artists. I believe they should have a chance to show the world their talents, and it's sad to think that we are missing amazing artists because they don't have the money to fund their dreams. I want to help these women become closer to achieving their goals, and my blog is a way to start that.

I hope you all have enjoyed this new type of blog post. I hope that I can do more of these in the future! Let me know what you think of my interview with Victoria, and go ahead and follow her on all her social media platforms. I will leave links to them below.
