Where You Are- Tenille Townes

Hello and welcome back to another blog post! This week I have a Nashville local artist Tenille Townes. I got to meet Tenille back in 2017 when she performed with Big Yellow Dog Publishing at The Family Wash. Now, when I say I got to “meet” her I mean that I went up to her after her set and told her how talented she was. So if someone would go up to her and say: “Tenille do you know Lydia MacDavid?”, she would probably have no clue who you were talking about. Anyways, back to Tenille. She was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada. She’s been very successful in Canada being nominated for three Canadian Country Music Awards including Female Artist of the Year when she was only seventeen years old. After moving to Nashville, Tenille got gigs at The Bluebird Cafe where people started noticing her talents. In 2018 Tenille signed with Columbia Nashville, and since then she has been touring with a lot of big named artists like Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town. Tenille’s music is very different from other country artists because a lot of her music is philosophical. She wonders what kind of questions she would ask God when she passes, or how someone’s daughter could become a homeless person on the side of the road. Tenille writes about different people’s walks in life, which is why I think she makes a perfect match for Lydia’s Girls.

Today I will be talking about one of my favorite songs by Tenille: Where You Are (the acoustic version). This song was written by Tenille, Keelan Donovan, and Daniel Tashain. When I went to see Tenille perform live, Keelan sang the main vocals because he was just signed to Big Yellow Dog and Tenille did back up vocals. Later on Tenille released the song on her album with her singing the vocals. I loved this song the moment I heard it; I think the lyrics are so great. I personally like the acoustic version better than the studio just because I think the lyrics are so personal, and when Tenille is singing with just a guitar you can feel that intimacy and the words come through more. Tenille’s guitar playing is amazing and you can definitely tell she’s dedicated many hours to practicing. In the verses she does soft strumming, but in the chorus she does these powerful strums that make the chorus have that climax sound with only a guitar. The chorus lyrics are astounding: “I’ll stand in any ticket line, any mountain I would climb just to find my way to where you are. I would swim across the sea, I would cut down any tree, leave a trail through the forest in the dark. Pave a path to get back to where you are.” These lyrics are so unique to me. Standing in a ticket line and cutting down any tree; these are the lyrics that stand out to me because I’ve never heard them before. I think that Tenille’s voice is so raw and rough, but it fits perfectly with this style. I hope you check out this song because I definitely think it is worth listening to. If you have any artist or songs you think would be good for Lydia’s Girls please put them in the comments below! I am always looking for new music.
